credit problems

So, you have a copy of your Free Personal Credit Report and don't know what to do next. If you haven't gotten a copy of your credit history yet then you need to....

Order Credit Report

You can go online and order your fre credit report from Be sure and get a tri-merge credit report which will allow you to view your credit from all three credit reporting agencies. This will not give you your credit scores but it will allow you to view all the data in your credit file.

Once you get your copy then here are a couple of things that you will want to check and see if they are problems for you.

One, do you have any bad credit that is more than seven years old from the date of last activity. A lot of collection agencies will "re-age" your account. Even though this is illegal you will still find that many collection agencies still do this.

If you find that you have accounts that fit this criteria then you will want to get them removed from your credit history in order to keep them from impacting your credit scores negatively.

You will want to mail a dispute letter (which is simply a letter stating your request) to all three of the credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). You may want to mail this letter certified with a return receipt requested just to make sure that they received your request.

In your letter simply show the item description and account number from your credit report and state that you are requesting validation that this item is being reported within the seven year time frame as allowed under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and that you wish for them to validate the original "date of delinquency" for this account.

It would be good to include a copy of your social security card and your driver's license. This may just save you some time, because they may very well write back and request proof of identity.

Two, look for any accounts that do not belong to you. Posting errors are frequently made and you will want to get any of these items removed from your account.
